Course overview

This weekend will break the myth that sock knitting is hard and complex.

You will leave having completed all the sections of a sock, if not quite a whole sock but armed with the skills to continue and finish your first pair at home. We will learning to knit socks on 5 needles and top down but will discuss alternatives during the course.

Course content

1. Introductions and level of knitting experience

2. Different types of sock needles, yarns and sock knitting techniques 

3. Knitting in the round using 5 needles, this is the technique we will use for the rest of the workshop

4. Size and pattern matching

5. Casting on, joining in the round and Cuffs

6. Turning the heel, different types

7. Decreasing for the toes and Kitchener stitch toe closing


Please bring your own wool & needles for your projects (so you can take them home to finish if you don’t complete in time). Hand dyed wool will be available to purchase here if you need extra.

Iona is a qualified and experienced fashion designer from Manchester who has been making clothes for herself and others for over 40 years. Taught to knit by her Gran at an early aged she has enjoyed being able to create unique one of pieces. Learning to crochet more recently she is keen to use these skills to make fresher looking crochet garments people are keen to make and wear.


Iona has a keen interest is what is being described as slow fashion, helping people learn the skills that will enable them to make pieces that they will want to wear and wear again for years to come, either from local sourced materials or upcycling garments / bedding.
